Frequently Asked Questions About Hypnosis
If you have any other questions that are not answered here, please do not hesitate in contacting me.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a form of talking psychotherapy, where we work with you to find the solutions to your problem. We do not go back to the past, or look at past trauma, believing that is not helpful to regaining your future happiness. By helping you to understand the science behind how the brain works, you will see that in most cases, your brain is behaving exactly as it is designed to, with the signals it is receiving. If we change the signals, we change its outlook. So we concentrate on reducing anxiety, getting you sleeping better and finding the positive things in your life that help your brain realise it doesn’t have to react the way it is now.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is called a “Brief Therapy”. That means that within a relatively short space of time (typically between 6-12 weeks) you should be feeling on top of things and back to the real you.
We give you a complimentary initial consultation where we explain the proven science of how your brain works, and how it is manifesting the problem you suffer from. We will explain how we will fix it and give you an MP3 self Hypnosis recording to listen to in the evenings before you sleep.
The sessions that follow will consist some uplifting conversation about the good things in your life, some neuroscience relevant to how your brain is working and some talking therapy to look at a small change you can bring about to improve things. This will be followed by 25 minutes of hypnotherapy, or trance as we call it.
Psychotherapy has been able to move on a lot in the last 30 years thanks to MRI and fMRI – where the activation of parts of the brain can be tracked, so neuroscientists have been able to prove so much about how the brain functions. We no longer need to operate on theory. There have been numerous clinical studies and experiments to backup everything we discuss, so if there is anything that sounds far fetched, that you doesn’t make sense to you, or you want to challenge, please feel free to do so in the sessions and I will happily give details of the studies that back it up.
Hypnosis or Trance is a state of focused attention, in which external stimuli can be ignored. We go in and out of trance many times a day. How often have you been driving and realised you have arrived at your destination without remembering the journey? Or, been wide awake on the train, and are surprised to find you are at your stop? We do it while we are walking, watching TV, daydreaming.
Sports people will talk of being “in the zone” where they cannot hear a roaring crowd, Sam Whaley-Cohen, the 2022 Grand National Winner said he wasn’t aware of the crowds or even other horses on the course as he galloped to victory.
In a trance state, your brain will bypass the Conscious Critical Factor (CCF). This is the process that in conscious thinking makes you reject ideas that do not fit within your view. So if I say in a normal conversation “You have all the confidence you need to succeed” your CCF may reject that suggestion out of hand. It will not absorb it. But in the hypnotic state the our brain will, absorb it. That does not mean to say the therapist can make suggestion that you should do anything you would not want to – you are not asleep, and are still perfectly aware of all the sounds around you and in control, you are just deeply focussed. So we use this state in hypnotherapy to help overcome anxiety and to focus the brain. It speeds up the process of therapy because the concepts we discuss are more readily absorbed, remembered and acted on. And before we use it in the session, you will have had an MP3 of exactly the same hypnosis to listen to at home, so it won’t feel odd or alien to you.
Solution Focussed Hypnotherapy is effective in treating or alleviating
- Business /career issues
- Lack of confidence
- Food dependency and weight gain
- Fears (generalised anxiety or specific)
Altered state theories see hypnosis as an altered state of mind or trance, marked by a level of awareness different from the ordinary conscious state. In contrast, some see hypnosis as a form of imaginative role-enactment. You are completely in control, aware of your environment, and not open to suggestion of doing or talking about anything you wouldn’t want to. Sessions are completely confidential and a safe space for you to explore your feelings.
The initial consultation is free and lasts about 40 minutes. It will help you decide if Solution Focussed Hypnotherapy is right for you. We will take some basic details from you, about what you would like to achieve from coming.
We will run through some brain science with you, so you can understand why your issue has occurred and more importantly, how it can be fixed. We discuss some basic strategies and give you a self-hypnosis recording to listen to before you go to sleep.
